Start your road trip out on the right foot with a few quick steps.
Step 1: Make sure the vehicle is ready
It's always a good idea to make sure your car is physically ready to make a long trip. Make sure you're up to date on any scheduled maintenance and that there are no safety concerns. Check your tire pressure and fluid levels. Top off windshield washer fluid, and buy one that fits the season — deicer for winter, bug formula for summer.
Step 2: Clean the vehicle thoroughly
Starting a road trip with a dirty car can be a drag. Get a large box and empty everything you don't need on this trip into the box. Then vacuum and wipe down the entire vehicle. Grab a couple of air fresheners of your choice — or use a natural deodorizer like baking soda. Baking soda neutralizes stubborn acidic odors (like sour milk) as well as other funky smells lurking in your car.
Step 3: Pack an essentials & emergency kit
- Jumper cables
- Flare kit
- Jack and replacement tire (check pressure first)
- Air compressor
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Phone charger
- Small fire extinguisher
- First aid kit
- Blankets
- Water
- Food that will last if necessary, like peanut butter
- Utility knife
- Waterproof poncho
- Tow rope
Vehicle maintenance and checks along the way
Check your vehicle before you take off and after each stop. Pack a car-care kit with some basic supplies — a small amount of extra gasoline, some engine oil, a tire pressure gauge, and a tire repair kit can all come in handy during long trips. You never know when something may happen, and being prepared keeps you out of danger.
Make sure all lights, signals, and wipers are working before you start moving each time. Simple things like broken or missing tail lights can cause accidents or get you pulled over. Have your most up-to-date inspection sticker, insurance card, and driver's license on you.
