When to tune

Is it time?

Modern engines run smooth for a long time β€” but not forever. These are the tells that yours is asking for a tune-up.

Rough idle or shaking

Uneven idle, especially at a stoplight, points to plugs, coils, or an intake issue.

Hesitation or misfires

That stumble on acceleration is a coil or plug on the way out. Fix it before it burns a piston.

Poor fuel economy

Fewer miles per tank without changing how you drive β€” usually plugs, sensors, or a dirty fuel system.

Hard starts

Cranks longer than it should, especially cold or hot? Fuel, ignition, or a coil could be the culprit.

Check-engine light for misfire

P0300–P0308 codes are misfires. We narrow down which cylinder and why.

Loss of pep

Engine feels sluggish or won't rev clean anymore β€” a common sign the routine tune is overdue.

Common questions

Have a different one? Call β€” a real mechanic answers during shop hours.

How often do modern cars need a tune-up?
Modern engines are low-maintenance β€” spark plugs typically last 60,000-100,000 miles depending on plug type. A full tune-up isn't the annual event it was in the 80s. Follow your manual's schedule and you'll be fine.
Will a tune-up fix my check-engine light?
Sometimes β€” if the code is misfire-related and you're due for plugs. But often the CEL is a sensor, not spark. We'll scan first and only replace what actually needs it.
Do you clean fuel injectors?
Yes β€” both in-tank additive treatments and professional on-car cleaning. Signs you might need it: rough idle, hesitation on acceleration, or a drop in MPG. Call and we'll tell you if cleaning will help or if the issue is something else.
What's the difference between plugs and coils?
Spark plugs create the spark in the cylinder β€” they wear out on a schedule (60k-100k mi). Ignition coils generate the high voltage that feeds the plugs β€” they don't wear on a schedule but fail intermittently. A misfire code will tell us which one to check first.

Not running the way it used to?

Bring it in. A tune-up is one of the cheapest ways to get real MPG and real power back.
